Our Legacy: Faith in Action The Trent River Oakey Grove Missionary Baptist Association, founded in 1871 by Reverend Stephen Scott, became a beacon of hope for formerly enslaved individuals and their families. Built on the pillars of Praising God, Pro- moting Fellowship, and Providing Education, the Association saw the urgency for education as a powerful tool for freedom and flourishing.

In 1887, the Association formally established the Church School Convention, serving the communities of Jones, Onslow, and Cra- ven Counties. It quickly became the heartbeat of Christian education for newly freed communities.

In a time when educational access was deeply limited, the Black church rose as a central hub for academic, spiritual, and literacy growth. Around 1887, the Association established the Church School Convention, a vital auxiliary that met the educational needs of communities across Jones, Onslow, and Craven Counties. Though many individual founders remain unnamed, they
drew on the wisdom of godly ministers to sow this life-changing seed. We honor the faithful pioneers who blazed the trail and embrace the sacred call to build boldly for generations to come.

Through powerful partnerships with institutions such as Shaw Divinity School and the N. C. General Baptist State Convention. The Church School Convention advanced spiritual excellence in academics and ministerial training. We also birthed key initia- tives such as the East Carolina School for Ministers and the TROGMBA Ministers Academy. 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to show thy- self approved unto God…”. Today, 138 years later, the Church School Convention continues to move in step with the Holy Spirit and to preserve our legacy while building a legacy. We are committed to making Jesus’ words relevant and alive for today: John 6:63 – “The words I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
